I have a confession to make: I’m not very good at art. In fact, one of the goals of tackling this whole indie developer thing was to improve my art skills (as mentioned in the very first post on this site).
In an effort to improve recently, I picked up (er, well more downloaded) some books by Andrew Loomis. It seems he inspired quite a number of artists we know today, including Alex Ross, who did the absolutely amazing Kingdom Come. He comes highly recommended. And his books are public domain, so you can find them easily anywhere online – but I’ll save you the trouble, and just give you a link.
Any talent comes from hours and hours of practice, and that’s what I’ve been doing. I sat down recently and drew a ton of heads just for the practice.
While they’re particularly the best thing in the world, I did notice even in the course of this exercise a vast improvement in my ability. I hope to keep it up the work, and share my progress with you as I go along.
I also recently tried to paint a color version of Mort recently, which you can see in the header of this post. But maybe you’d enjoy a more detailed version. Click it to see it full sized:
